Circle and Wulff Honored by IGFA
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) inducted five new members into its fishing hall of fame. OWAA members include legendary angler and casting expert Joan Wulff and the dean of North American outdoor writers, Homer Circle. Other inductees include bill-fishing legend Dr. Ruben Jaen; rod designer Gary Loomis; and scientist Peter Wright. Wulff has been a tournament caster for more than 20 years and won 18 titles while raising casting to an art form. Circle, or “Uncle Homer,” has covered fishing for more than 50 years for Sports Afield magazine and Bassmaster magazine. For more information, visit www.igfa.org.
Patterson Receives National Award
OWAA President Rich Patterson recently received the National Leadership Award from the Association of Nature Center Administrators (ANCA). It was presented Aug. 23 at the group’s annual summit at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee. The award recognizes Patterson’s longtime leadership and innovation as director of the Dillon Nature Center from 1975 until 1978 and the Indian Creek Nature Center since 1978. Patterson, 58, is believed to be the longest serving of approximately 1,500 nature center directors scattered across the United States and Canada. In 1989 he and 12 other nature center directors founded ANCA as an association working to expand nature-center staff professionalism.
OWAA to Meet in Bismarck in 2008
All systems are go for OWAA’s 81st annual conference, which will be held in Bismarck, N.D., June 21-24, 2008. Conference Program Chair John Beath is putting together an outstanding conference program. We’re planning outdoors activities for opening day morning (Saturday), and a live auction on Community Night (Sunday evening). Also, we’re preparing for a combined Awards Night whereby the Excellence in Crafts and Honorary Awards presentations will conclude our conference Tuesday night. Walker Receives Award of Excellence
A marketing column by OWAA member Mike Walker in Soundings Trade Only magazine has received the Crystal Award of Excellence in The Communicator Awards 2007 International Print Media competition. The column was about why upper management should resist the urge to turn news-release content into puffery. Walker is a regular contributor to the magazine, which penetrates the backbone of the recreational marine industry distributors. It reaches more than 30,000 key decision makers, including manufacturers, dealers, marina/boatyard operators, retailers and distributors.

Del Giudice Hired as Executive Director
OWAA member Paula Del Giudice was recently hired by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as the next executive director for its Seattle Guild. The Guild raises $3 million each year for diabetes research with its annual gala. This position will allow Del Giudice the opportunity to have a significant impact toward reaching a cure for this devastating disease, which has severely impacted two family members and a close friend. Del Giudice, an OWAA board member and 2007 recipient of the Jade of Chiefs Award, plans to continue freelance writing and editing via her affiliation with Outdoor Woman Magazine.
Writing Contest for Youths
OWAA helps budding writers via its annual Norm Strung Youth Writing Contest. Cash scholarships are awarded to winners in grades 6-12 for poetry and prose categories. Last year’s awards totaled approximately $1,000. Thank you to Delta Waterfowl, www.deltawaterfowl.org, for partially sponsoring this contest! If you know a student who would like to enter the contest, rules can be read at http://www.owaa.org/youth_writing.htm. Eligible entries must be published during calendar year 2007. Slemp Receives Murrow Award
OWAA member Chris Slemp of Hurricane, W.Va., has been awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award, one of radio’s highest honors. Slemp, who hosts the syndicated “West Virginia Outdoors,” was recently recognized with a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Continuing Coverage of the Sago Mine disaster in West Virginia. The award recognized the entire MetroNews Radio Network news team for coverage of the breaking story, the agonizing three-day search for the trapped miners and the investigations following the tragedy. A National Edward R. Murrow Award is radio’s equivalent to a television Emmy or a newspaper’s Pulitzer.
Matthews to Lead Trail Association
OWAA member Bruce Matthews accepted the position of executive director for the North Country Trail Association (NCTA) in Lowell, Mich. NCTA is a nonprofit membership organization operating with the National Park Service to coordinate efforts to maintain, acquire and promote the use of the North Country National Scenic Trail, a premier footpath that stretches for about 4,600 miles across seven northern states. Pyne Awarded Telly
OWAA member Lawrence Pyne received a 2007 Telly award for his work with Vermont Public Television’s “Outdoor Journal.” He received a Bronze Telly in the nature/wildlife category for a segment on fishing for brook trout on Maine’s Rapid River. Bloom Leaves Newspaper for Natural Resources Job
OWAA’s first vice president Phil Bloom has turned in his press pass after 33 years in the newspaper profession and embarked on a new career. Bloom left his longtime position as outdoors editor at The (Fort Wayne, Ind.) Journal Gazette – his home for the past 28 years – and began his new job as director of communications for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on Sept. 10. A member of OWAA since 1991, Bloom plans to remain active in the organization. He is also a member of Hoosier Outdoor Writers and Outdoor Writers of Ohio.

Schara Inducted Into Fishing Hall of Fame
The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame announced it has inducted OWAA member Ron Schara into the Fishing Hall of Fame. Schara received the award July 14 at the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis. Schara hosts several regional and national television shows. He is the host and executive producer of “Minnesota Bound” on the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, as well as “Backroads with Ron and Raven” and “Pheasants Forever.” Schara hosts two outdoor programs on WCCO radio and has written for the Minneapolis Star Tribune for more than 30 years. OWAA Gave Away $15,000 in College Scholarships; Apply for 2008
OWAA’s Education Committee this year awarded more than $15,000 in Bodie McDowell Scholarships to students of outdoor communications fields, including print, film, art and broadcasting. If you know students who should apply for next year’s scholarships, go to http://www.owaa.org/scholarships.htm for guidelines and applications. The program is open to eligible students in two categories: (1) college undergraduate students entering their junior or senior years of study and (2) college graduate students. Television and radio producer Paul Lepisto was hired by Izaak Walton League of America as a regional conservation coordinator, working on Missouri River conservation issues. Recipients of OWAA’s 2007 Excellence in Craft awards were announced at OWAA’s Roanoke, Va., conference. The coveted “President’s Choice” awards, which are selected from that year’s winners by OWAA’s current president, are as follow: Pat Wray, Corvallis, Ore., (Magazine Category); Rich Landers, Spokane, Wash. (Newspaper Category); Gary Kramer, Willows, CA (Art/Photo Category); Chris Slemp, Culloden, W. Va. (Radio Category); and Bill Sherck, Minneapolis, Minn. (TV/Video Category). All of the 2007 EIC winners will be published in the August OU and can be viewed at www.owaa.org.
Daniels Promoted
OWAA member Scott Daniels has been promoted to managing editor of Scouting magazine, published by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Irving, Texas. Scouting is published six times per year for the BSA’s volunteer adult leaders of Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting and Venturing. It has a nationwide circulation of 1 million.
