Animal Rights Group Defends Sanctuary that Abuses Animals- (12/22)

A national animal rights organization is sticking up for a sanctuary that has neglected and mistreated animals.



According to the Chicago Tribune, the Connecticut-based Friends of Animals is defending the former managers of San Antonio’s Primarily Primates animal sanctuary after Probate Judge Guy Herman found that the directors were neglecting and mistreating animals. The animals were sealed in filthy cages behind doors that had rusted shut, the heating system was broken, the facility was infested with cockroaches and rats, and animal feces and food were rotting on the property.



Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott alleged that Primarily Primates’ charitable funds were used to buy groceries, liquor, and even a house for one of the staff members. The sanctuary’s founder, Wallace Swett, allegedly hoarded hundreds more animals than the facility could hold.



A Dallas wildlife rehabilitator was appointed by the court to improve conditions at the facility.



Primarily Primates sounds like a place that activists would demand is shut down, but instead, Friends of Animal is paying legal fees to help the administrators regain control of the shelter. Friends of Animals President Priscilla Feral insists the animals get marvelous care.



“I’m not freaked out by mice,” Feral said when asked about photographs showing swarms of vermin at the facility. “And the roaches – it’s not odd that they are there. They are part of nature.”



Feral called the cruelty allegations, which were brought by the Virginia-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a scheme by the group to take over the sanctuary, kill the animals, and sell the facility’s valuable land.



PETA claims it has no control over the sanctuary now that it is under the court’s jurisdiction; however, suspicion of the group’s motives is understandable. PETA, which claims to be uncompromising in its stance against animal cruelty, has killed more than 14,400 dogs and cats and pets since 1998. In 2005, two PETA employees allegedly picked up dogs and cats from shelters and dumped their dead bodies in the garbage.

California Hunters Face Forced Spay and Neuter Law Spay and Neuter Bill Passes Committee

California sportsmen face advancing legislation that will put unnecessary hardships on sporting dog owners and outlaw the breeding of accomplished hunting dogs.

Assembly Bill 1634, which requires dogs over four months of age to be spayed or neutered, passed the Assembly Business and Professions Committee on April 24 by a vote of 7 to 3. The bill, sponsored by Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, requires dog owners to have their dogs spayed or neutered at their own expense. Registered, purebred dogs are exempt from the requirement. The bill has been re-referred to the Committee on Appropriations.

“California sportsmen must turn the heat up on lawmakers,” said USSA Senior Vice President Rick Story. “Assembly Bill 1634 will cause unnecessary financial hardships on middle and low income sportsmen who will be forced to spay or neuter their animals, and will prevent people from breeding extremely accomplished sporting dogs simply because they are not purebred.”

Assembly Bill 1634 will also cause an unintended health concern for dogs and the public. There is a risk that individuals who do not comply with the new law will stop taking their dogs for veterinary care. Although the bill does not mandate that veterinarians report violators, some will fear citations and forego vet visits. As a result, the dogs will not receive regular inoculations that protect the animals and the public from disease.

The anti’s have marked California’s hound hunting traditions for elimination, but a vigilant sportsmen’s community continues to strike back.

“In recent years, California sportsmen have united to protect their hobbies and hunting interests, and it is time again to take action,” said Story.

Take Action! California sportsmen should contact Assembly members and let them know that the hunting dog community opposes AB 1634, an excessive bill that will devastate the future of their sport. Explain that the bill criminalizes dog owners who legitimately breed hunting dogs. Let them know you oppose the establishment of unattainable regulations to receive an exemption. Toyota Texas Bass Classic Returns in 2008

Houston, TX - Officials for the Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) have announced that the unique team angling event will return for its second year. The Tournament will be held on Lake Fork in East Texas, April 18-20, 2008, and will adhere to the strict slot limits of the lake. The event will benefit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and its outdoor recreation programs.

"It is a great honor to announce the Toyota Texas Bass Classic will be returning to Lake Fork in 2008," said TTBC Co-Founders Dan Friedkin and Donato Ramos. "Not only will this allow us to continue to showcase the outstanding bass fishing in Texas, but it also sets the standard for conservation practices in angling and it benefits TPWD programs."

The Toyota Texas Bass Classic is a one of a kind event in the sport of angling. The Tournament features 100 professional anglers grouped in teams of four. 2007 was the first year of the event and the team of Terry Scroggins (captain), Chris Daves, Frank Ippoliti and James Niggemeyer took home the $250,000 team purse. They reeled in 54 fish totaling 244 pounds 12 ounces.

"Through the support and hard work of multiple organizations, this Tournament has reinvented the bass fishing Tournament format and reinvigorated the sport for many," said Professional Anglers Association
(PAA) President Mark Davis.

The 100 contestants, all of whom are qualified members of the PAA, will be arranged in four-man teams for the Tournament's first two days on Friday and Saturday, with five of those teams qualifying for the finals on the Tournament's third day. The four-man teams will consist of two pairs of anglers, one pair fishing in one boat for four hours each morning and the other pair in the afternoon.

"Toyota is thrilled to be on board again with this tremendous event and to be able to support TPWD and its efforts," announced Toby Hynes, President, Gulf States Toyota. "It is great to put the spotlight on Lake Fork but even better to see the positive impact that this event has on the programs sponsored by TPWD."

Through the TTBC, the TPWD will receive a $250,000 donation that will be used to benefit their first-class youth fishing and outreach programs. "The focus of these programs is to expose kids and non-traditional users to the great fishing and the conservation of the TPWD's Freshwater Resources upon which good fishing depends," said JC Fassino, President, Texas Bass Classic Foundation.

In the Toyota Texas Bass Classic, all fish caught above 14 inches will be weighed and the top five caught each day credited to each angler. Fish will be weighed in the boat by a certified and independent observer, and then returned to the lake immediately. This avoids having fish held in live wells for long periods of time and will set precedence on how fish are to be handled in future professional bass tournaments. Contestants will be allowed to keep one fish larger than 24 inches, which will be weighed at the lake-side weigh-in scales, then turned over to TPWD for proper handling and release back to the lake.

The Tournament's format is designed to appeal to spectators, and includes a kids' area with outdoor activities, live music and a Jumbotron showing continuous action to the audience. Morning and afternoon weigh-ins will assure high levels of activity during the day. While half of the anglers are on the water fishing, the other flight of anglers will be on shore giving clinics, signing autographs and interacting with the public. A fishing industry expo will feature instructional seminars and the latest in fishing equipment, gear and accessories.

In 2007, over 27,000 people attended the events at Lake Fork over the course of the Pro-Am and TTBC tournaments. An hour-long national network broadcast is scheduled for the event.

The 2007 Lucchese Toyota Tundra Big Bass Award went to angler John Sappington for his largest Tournament catch, weighing in at 11 pounds 2 ounces. The big catch earned him a custom pair of Lucchese Boots, Stetson hat and a Lucchese edition Toyota Tundra truck.

TRACE ADKINS TO HEADLINE TOYOTA TEXAS BASS CLASSIC ENTERTAINMENT

HOUSTON, TEXAS – Country music superstar Trace Adkins will headline a world-class entertainment line-up at the 2008 Toyota Texas Bass Classic, a Professional Anglers Association sanctioned event. PAA Toyota Texas Bass Classic Qualifier Field Set

Pros from 20 states to converge on Choke Canyon Lake




BENTON, KENTUCKY – The Professional Anglers Association (PAA) today announced the field of anglers competing in the PAA Toyota Texas Bass Classic Qualifier, set for Feb. 8 – 9, 2008 on Choke Canyon Reservoir.



The Qualifier will advance the top 25 anglers overall from the competition to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic, an event sanctioned by the PAA, to be held April 18 – 20 at Lake Fork Reservoir. The 25 anglers advancing from the Qualifier will round out the four-angler teams competing at Lake Fork in the second event of its kind held to benefit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and its outdoor recreational programs.



“The PAA members who stepped up to the plate and entered this qualifier have shown us their spirit and support for their organization,” said PAA President Mark Davis. “We hope they are rewarded with some great fishing at Choke Canyon, which from what we’ve heard from the experts, rivals the quality of bass fishing at any lake in the state of Texas.”



Added Davis, “this will be a unique event, and we don’t want to take away from who wins the overall event. When you step back though and look at the big picture, there are actually 25 winners who from here will move on to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic.”



The field of 64 contestants from 20 states includes five invitees from the National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship. Each of the 64 contestants will be accompanied by an official observer for both days of the competition on Choke Canyon. The tournament rules will allow each contestant to return to the scales with 5 bass measuring a minimum of 14 inches.



The overall payout of $165,000 includes a first-place prize of a certificate for a 2008 Toyota Tundra and an additional cash bonus of $4,000. Five big bass awards in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded each of the two days of the competition, for a total of $10,000 in bonus cash.



Tournament headquarters is Choke Canyon State Park (Calliham Unit) in Calliham, Texas. Daily weigh-ins on Feb. 8-9 will begin at 3:30 p.m.

The congressional district of Texas 22nd has been in news recently. It has attracted the attention of the people across the world as the constituency held two elections on the same day. This was mainly because the House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who represented the constituency, withdrew from the election after winning the primary. The leader retired mainly as a result of allegations made on him on charges of corruption. As there was a need to fill the seat vacated by the leader for his unexpired term, a special election was held.

The special elections of the Texas 22nd district saw Shelley Sekula-Gibbs win as a write-in candidate for the unexpired term of the republican leader Tom DeLay. Sekula-Gibbs was sworn in on November 13. Sekula-Gibbs’ situation is similar to one experienced by Congressman Neil Abercrombie, who won a special election in September 1986, while simultaneously losing the primary election for a full term in Hawaii's 1st congressional district. He, thus, was elected to a term of a few short months, though he was later elected in 1990 and has held the seat since.

In the following general election there were three main candidates: Democrat and former US Representative Nick Lampson, Libertarian Party candidate Bob Smither, and Republican Sekula-Gibbs. Only Lampson's and Smither's names appeared on the ballot, as Shelley Sekula-Gibbs had to run as a write-in candidate. In this race, Lampson captured 52% of the vote, to Sekula-Gibbs' 42%, and Smither collected 6%.

This year, the candidates standing for election in this district include known names like former Sugar Land mayor Dean Hrbacek (http://www.deanforcongress.com/) , former Pasadena mayor John Manlove, former John Cornyn Chief of Staff Pete Olson, Family District Judge Jim Squier, State Representative Bob Talton, and NASA contractor Ryan Rowley. Dean Hrbacek is a former Councilman and Mayor of Sugar Land, a business attorney, board certified in tax law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and a Certified Public Accountant.

Field Set for Toyota Texas Bass Classic
Houston, Texas – The 2008 Toyota Texas Bass Classic field has been completed following the Professional Anglers Association Qualifier at Choke Canyon Lake. 25 PAA pros qualified for the team angling competition held April 18 – 20 at Lake Fork.



Jason Reyes, winner of the inaugural Toyota Texas Bass Classic qualifier, held February 8-9, 2008 at Choke Canyon in South Texas, finished the two-day contest with 10 bass weighing a collective 48 pounds and 3 ounces, joining 24 other anglers that will advance to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic.

Brookshire’s & Bass Pro Shops to Sell Tickets

For the Toyota Texas Bass Classic
Houston, Texas – Tournament officials have announced that tickets for the Toyota Texas Bass Classic will be made available at participating Brookshire’s & Bass Pro Shops throughout Texas. The Toyota Texas Bass Classic, a Professional Anglers Association sanctioned event being held April 18 – 20 at Lake Fork, is a unique team fishing competition complete with live entertainment, family fun zone and expo areas. A three-day pass valid Friday, Saturday and Sunday, can be purchased at Brookshire’s and Bass Pro Shops for a discounted price of $20.



“We are extremely excited to announce Brookshire’s & Bass Pro Shops as our Tournament’s official ticket retailers,” said Tournament Director Lenny Francoeur. “We strive to make tickets readily available to all area residents and feel these partnerships will increase the ease of access in 2008.”



Tickets include access to all three days of the fishing competition, concerts acts, parking, access to the Family Fun Zone and kids 17 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult. Proceeds from this event go toward the $250,000 donation that the Toyota Texas Bass Classic will give to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Ticketing became a necessity while giving consideration to the parking and venue space restrictions, operational logistics and local transit and roadways. Tournament and local officials agreed on this measure and it will allow the Tournament to accurately track its attendance and develop advance plans accordingly.



Participating Bass Pro Shops that will be selling tickets include stores in Grapevine, Garland, Bossier City, Houston and San Antonio. Participating area Brookshire’s include locations in Canton, Daingerfield, Emory, Gilmer, Gladewater, Hawkins, Lindale, Mineola, Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Toyota Texas Bass Classic Now Offering One-Day Tickets


Houston, Texas – The Toyota Texas Bass Classic is now selling one-day tickets to the Tournament at Lake Fork, April 18 – 20. One-day tickets are day specific and can be purchased for $10 in advance and on-site.

“Our hope is that by adding a one-day ticket option to our existing three-day ticket book we will allow more fans the opportunity to attend the Tournament and musical concerts,” said Tournament Director Lenny Francoeur. “We have recognized the concern that many fans traveling to Lake Fork are unable to attend all three days, and we want to encourage them to be there, even if only for one day.”

The one-day ticket option still contains all of the exciting festivities at Lake Fork, including: elite Tournament fishing, musical concerts (Saturday & Sunday), parking and family fun zone. Toyota Texas Bass Classic Only One Month Away

Team Angling Competition Benefits Charity; Kids 17 & under Free



Houston, Texas – The Toyota Texas Bass Classic, a Professional Anglers Association sanctioned event, is only one month away from its return to Lake Fork. The team competition benefits the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD). It will feature the biggest names in professional angling for three days of Tournament fishing and Trace Adkins headlining an all-star country music line-up. The Tournament is held April 18 – 20.



Lake Fork is one of the most prolific fishing spots in the United States for largemouth bass. The TPWD manages the lake's fishery with very strict rules designed to protect fish of certain sizes. Fish in a “slot” between 14 and 24 inches must be returned to the lake immediately when they are caught. The Tournament’s rules have been designed to obey the slot limits without inhibiting the anglers’ competitive zeal. Independent observers on each boat use Boga-Grip scales to weigh each fish and live scoring keeps the fans up-to-date throughout the day.



The second-year event consists of 26 four-man teams captained by some of the top anglers in the world, including: 2008 Bassmaster Classic winner Alton Jones, four-time Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam and 2007 winning captain Terry “Big Show” Scroggins. Teams split into groups of two and fish in morning and afternoon flights. Only the top five teams by cumulative weight advance to Sunday’s final round. The team with the largest total weight after three days will win the winner’s share of the $750,000 purse.



Country music star Trace Adkins will be the headline entertainer for the event, performing on Saturday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m. Local favorite Kacey Musgraves will perform earlier on Saturday. Robert Earl Keen will be the featured entertainer on Sunday, April 20, with Roger Creager also performing on Sunday. In addition, there will be recreational and educational activities for kids and families during the Tournament.



CBS Sports will broadcast a one-hour special reprising the Toyota Texas Bass Classic on Sunday, May 11 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. EST and it will feature highlights from the three Tournament days, with a focus on the final teams and the awards ceremony.

Study: Texas Top Dog in Economic Impact of Hunting, Fishing March 24, 2008 (Texas)

A recently released nationwide study showed Texas at the top of the list when it comes to the economic impact of hunters and anglers.

The results of the study, called “Hunting and Fishing: Bright Stars of the American Economy – A force as big as the outdoors,” take into account a number of variables, including total number of participants, number of jobs provided, amount of money generated and total tax revenue for each state. Results are based on 2006 numbers.

Texas boasts 2.6 million sportsmen who infuse the hunting and fishing industry with $6.6 billion per year. Tax revenue for the state was $1.3 billion and 106,000 jobs are supported by hunting.

Florida was in second place with two million hunters and fishermen and $4.8 billion spent.

Texas did not take first place in all of the possible categories in the report. Pennsylvanians placed first for spending the most time outdoors and Georgia was the most traveled to state for hunting.

The survey revealed that nationally in 2006, the combined 34 million hunters over the age of 16 generated $76 billion into the economy.

Area pro angler Sean Hoernke reeled in the top bass of the weekend, a 9 lb. 8 oz. monster that could earn him the Big Bass Award for the tournanment. Hoernke is from The Woodlands, Texas and his catch propelled him to the “Tundra Ten”. The field was cut to the top-10 following Saturday’s action.

Boat takeoffs are free and open to the public. They take place in the morning from Papa’s On the Lake on Hwy 105 West. There will be signs along Hwy 105 directing fans where to park.

Event parking is $5. Tickets available at the gate - $20 per day.

The Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) will take place on Lake Conroe, Oct. 1-3. The three-day tournament has grown to become a highly significant event in the world of professional bass fishing. With many industry insiders calling for a unifying world championship, Bassfan.com states “many have argued that the Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) is in fact a unifying championship.”

For that reason, Bassfan.com has elected to include the TTBC in the BassFan World Rankings. A new edition of the Rankings will be published after the conclusion of the TTBC.

The final 50 angler field was announced this week at a tournament press conference. The field is comprised of defending champion Dave Lefebre, the top 15 from the 2010 FLW Tour Angler of the Year standings, top 15 from the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year standings, the top 15 from the PAA Bass Pro Shops Angler of the Year standings and four tournament exemptions.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic Anglers to Appear at Academy Sports + Outdoors Stores
Pro anglers will sign autographs at Houston-area stores, Sept. 28

Conroe, Texas – Nine of the top bass anglers in the country will sign autographs for fans at three Houston-area Academy Sports + Outdoors Stores, Tuesday, Sept. 28, as part of the Toyota Texas Bass Classic. Fishing legend Kevin VanDam will appear at the Conroe store. Greg Hackney, Mark Davis, Scott Suggs and Ron Shuffield will appear at the Humble store. Mike McClelland, John Crews, Bryan Thrift and Gary Klein will appear at the Tomball location. All appearances will take place on Sept. 28 from 7 – 9 p.m.

The world championship of professional bass fishing, the Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) is a three-day tournament held on Lake Conroe, Oct. 1 – 3. The TTBC’s 50-angler field combines the top PAA anglers from the FLW Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series and PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series presented by Carrot Stix.

VanDam is the all-time leading money winner in professional fishing with over $5 million in career earnings. In 2010, he earned his third Bassmaster Classic title and added his sixth Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year award.

An eight-year pro fishing veteran, Hackney was runner-up for the Bassmaster Angler of the Year title in 2004, his rookie season on the tour. He won the FLW Tour’s 2009 Forrest Wood Cup Championship in Pittsburgh.

Davis has been fishing professionally for 25 years. He won the Bassmaster Classic and Angler of the Year titles in 1995, the first time both titles have been won by the same angler.

Suggs became the first bass pro to claim a $1 million payday after winning the 2007 Forrest Wood Cup, the FLW Tour’s championship.

One of the true veterans of the sport, Shuffield has competed on the BASS and FLW circuits for a quarter-century. Shuffield has garnered more than $1.4 million in winnings, with seven career victories.

McClelland has tallied six total wins en route to earning $1.3 million in his 14-year career.

A 10-year veteran, Crews got his Bassmaster Elite Series season off with a bang with a 1-ounce win over Skeet Reese on the California Delta last March. Crews stayed consistent all year and qualified for the Elite Series “post-season” in Alabama.

Thrift has seen success this year on the FLW Tour. Thrift captured an FLW Tour win on Lake Norman near Charlotte in spring 2010 and fished solidly all season to win his first FLW Tour Angler of the Year points champion­ship.

Klein won the second B.A.S.S. tournament he ever entered and has qualified 28 times for the Bassmaster Classic. He won the Angler of the Year titles in 1989 and 1993.

Tickets to the TTBC are $15 in advance and are available for Saturday and Sunday individually. The daily tickets include grounds access and admission to live concerts held at the event venue each day. Concerts and other ticketed events, including tournament weigh-ins, interactive expo areas, fireworks shows and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Adventures Area will take place at the Lone Star Convention & Expo Center’s Festival Grounds in Conroe. Children 17 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult. All active military, police, fire and EMS personnel are free with valid identification.
