  • Wednesday morning I launched out of Port Sulphur armed with live shrimp and various fishing lures and headed to the fishing camps out in the bay. Winds were light out of the north and there were plenty boats out. Fishing was slow but the trout in that area are large. If you didnít have live shrimp you probably didnít catch much as one by that fished near by using lures tight-line didnít catch anything while I occasionally pulled in some fat specks fishing live shrimp under a clicking cork. I think many boats were out to beat the bad weather destined for the weekend. When I ran out of live shrimp, I headed into Lake Washington and fished a lure I forgot all about: Berkley Gulp swim mullet in glow white. Just as soon as I threw this out under a cork, an instant hit occurred and I pulled in a large speck. The weather was getting hot and I fished that lure until it was torn up and that was the only one I had left, so I headed back in. I caught a nice mess of fat trout and one redfish and one southern kingfish-- know as a channel mullet here. This is a delectable eating fish often confused with a croaker.

    • Slammed them today at Shell Beach. I had the Renshaw group from Atlanta today and it was not a typical trip for them. Generally when Brian comes to town the wind blows like no one business, but today it was clam as could be. We ran out into the Sound and got on a decent trout bite putting close to 60 in before it died. Our shrimp were running low since we lost a lot of them this morning for some reason, but Capt. Jakamo saved the day giving me his remaining shrimp as they were done and headed in. We hit one more rig and that was all it took to fill the box with 125 trout, 1 red, and 3 sheepshead. Fun time on a beautiful day.

      • Funky weather Friday at Shell Beach. When the David Broussard group showed up at the dock there was quite a light show going on in the area. Good thing was most of it was clearing out as we pulled out the slip. With the wind blowing a bit too much to get out to the Sound and plenty of storms in the area we set up in a semi protected area off the MRGO. The bite was not fast, but the trout were very nice so we sat there and worked on them with live shrimp 3í under a cork. With more rain building and a good box of trout we headed in just before noon beating the weather.

I have some open days next week, and the weather looks great.

        • Port Sulphur with a P for Pitiful

Perfect weather, incoming tide, and light breeze equals very little fish catching. Went from Lake Washington and out to the bays and saw plenty fishing boats out Friday. The Myrtle Grove marina didnít have live shrimp so I only used lures. The boats I watched around me only caught catfish on live shrimp from my observation. The water temperature was 85 degrees and the fishing was dead. Not slow, dead. I Caught 5 trout and headed in early as the heat was on. One angler said he caught some redfish nearby launch with dead shrimp. Iíd adventure to say he wrestled with a lot of catfish in between. This picture tells me that the trout or out along the deeper water along the coastal areas and deeper bays where cooler, deeper water brings them.

          • Port Sulphur Great Trip

Pat and I left out of Port Sulphur this morning under perfect fishing conditions: calm winds, incoming tide, and plenty live shrimp in the bait well. Fishing was much better than last week as we started out in Lake Washington, but the trout were under sized. We worked our way through the lake fishing different oyster reefs, picking up a keeper trout here and there but wasted to much time feeding live shrimp to throw-back fish. Once we made it out and into the bay we got into a nice catch of keeper speckled trout. When we ran out of live shrimp we continued catching trout on Berkley swim mullet in glow white under corks. We wound up with an ice chest of nice trout.

              Crab Haven

Sunday 3 of us went crabbing at parish line canal with 20 crab nets baited with turkey necks. We left the Williams Blvd launch around 6:15 am and by 9:45 am back at the launch with over a hamper of crabs caught for that day’s boil. Crabs are pretty much plentiful right now.

              • Itís been a good June so far at Shell Beach. The summer weather is here and so are the trout. We have mostly been fishing deep in Breton Sound targeting larger trout with good success, but having to hunt around from rig to rig catching several trout till the bull reds or sharks take over. This makes for a lot of exciting action and ice chest stuffed to the top with fish. As good as it has been, it will only get better and better as we head into and through July. Speaking of July, I have some open dates available so call, text, or email me to get your trip in the books.

                • Windy Port Sulphur Trout Trip

I left tout of Port Sulphur launch solo. The weather was good but a bit windier than predicted. I couldnít get out the open bay due to the windy conditions so I had to fish Lake Washington where the trout are smaller. I caught a mix bag of small white trout and speckled trout and got tired of throwing back undersized specs. I use live shrimp but when I ran out they hit the Berkley white glow swim mullet under a cork. I came in early, about 10 am, and headed back home.

                  • Crab Heaven Again

3 of us left out of the Kenner boat launch and headed to the locale parish line canal, where I had the day before dropped 6 crab traps in anticipation of picking them up the next morning before we set the crab nets out. Plenty crabs in the area, but many small ones, mostly males. The traps were baited with fish carcasses and the 20 nets with turkey necks. We filled the red plastic bushel basket to the top and back at the launch before 10 am.

                    • Port Sulphur Mixed Bag

Two of us left out of Port Sulphur and headed out to Bay Ronquille to fish a spot we call the rock pile. Fishing with live shrimp and corks and various lures we were catching a mix bag of white trout, specks, and large Gafftopsail. Fishing was slow at times and the few boats around us werenít catching anything. This is the time of year when the sun heats up the water, the fish shut down around 10 am. We had a box of fish and threw back a good number of under sized trout. We had a good trip since the weather was calm with a light breeze and overcast skies.

                      • West wind trout at Shell Beach. Saturday I had the Reliable Disposal crew on the boat. We were greeted to a stiff NW wind that made for a rather sporty ride to our destination. Things started off a little slow, but after bouncing around a few wellheads we got on a couple good bites with Campoís live shrimp 3í under a cork. We got lucky with the wind too, as it laid down as we fished making for a nice dry ride back in. The guys had a lot of fun and put together a nice box of fish with 60 trout, 12 reds, and 6 heads.

                        • Wind from the West fish bite the best. Not really, any kind of west wind is not favorable for our area, but if it is not too bad you can deal with it. Deal with it is what the Chad Mason group did today. After a slightly bumpy ride to the fishing grounds we stop at our first rig and caught a few nice trout, but they would never turn on. We moved over to another rig and once we figured out where they were the corks were going down and pretty trout were flying in the boat. We got up to 65 trout and my crew said they had plenty so we heading in early and beat the heat.

The fishing has been really good and I have some openings next week and the following week. Get those kids out on the water before school starts back. Give me a call, text, or email to get in on the fun.

                          • Port Sulphur- Quality not Quantity Trout Trip

The morning started out discouraging as I pulled up solo to the Myrtle Grove marine to purchase live shrimp only to be told they didnít have any. This is the spot where I only buy the live shrimp on my way to Port Sulphur to launch. This time of year live bait is mandatory if you want to catch trout in any numbers. So the marina lady said we have live minnows, as I discouragingly walked to my truck starting to leave. So that was better than no live bait, so I bought 30 minnows. It was really looking bad at my first spot out in Bay Ronquille. Under a cork about 2 feet down the live minnows didnít even draw a bump. I was fishing 5 ft of water. I was very nervous because the only other bait I had was dead shrimp and lures. The glow beetle under a cork tipped with shrimp yielded one trout and thereafter catfish. I moved out deeper into the bay where the camps are, and to make a long story short, the trout would not hit the minnows unless they were fished Carolina rigged on the bottom. The trout were large when they did take the bait, telling me the heat of summer drives the trout to the bottom of the water, a cooler area. I caught a nice mess of large trout before I had enough of the heat. On the way in a stopped over an oyster reef and caught more large trout, bigger than the school trout that are mostly caught this time of year. In this spot, the minnow had to be close to the bottom under a cork, moving across the oyster reef. I rigged the cork above the Carolina rig so I could adjust the depth of the bait right off the bottom of the reef. If it wasnít, no bite took place. Iíll be buying live minnows next trip out since they catch bigger trout and stay alive longer then the live shrimp.

                            • Monster Speckled Trout Port Sulphur

Tuesday morning I stopped by Myrtle Grove marina to get live cocahoes but they had none so, I wound up getting live shrimp. While I was waiting for them to serve me, since they werenít quite opened yet, I decide to try casting my cast net at the launch ramp to see if I could catch some minnows. Every cast produced finger mullets and some shrimp. I left the marina to head to Port Sulphur loaded down with plenty live bait. The weather was calm and the tide was on the rise. I went straight to one of the camps out in Bay Ronquille where the water was very clean. I rigged Carolina style with live finger mullet. Huge trout were obliging as the water on the surface teamed with porgies flipping out the water and trout in hot pursuit. I managed to get some nice trout in the boat, trout size in length of a 48 qt Igloo. The bite lasted about 2 hours but the tide came to a halt and so did the bite. Catfish started to bite instead, a sure sign of dead tide. Thereafter I tried plenty of different spots and nothing was biting but catfish. I threw all sorts of lures, tight line and with corks. No trout. I was satisfied with the minimal catch of very unusually large trout.

                              • Friday fun at Shell Beach. I picked up John, his wife Nicole and their son Q from their camp. It was Qís birthday fishing trip and he was ready to hit the water. It was just a little to breezy to run out to the Sound so we stayed closer in. Fishing with Campoís live shrimp 3í under a cork they managed to put some good trout on ice with plenty throwbacks to weed through before the wind picked up and killed the bite. Q wanted to catch a redfish so we made move and beat the bank of a bayou. They had fun catching some nice reds for the grill that evening.

                                • Late report from last Saturday at Shell Beach. I had the pleasure of taking Bert and Molly into the marsh to look for some reds. It was breezy and overcast with the tide rising fast. We made one stop and it was nonstop action. The reds were silly and we limited out in short order. They had a great time catching a bunch more reds before we headed in just in time to beat the rain.

                                  • Finally some cool weather Trout at Shell Beach. Friday I had the Renshaw group of 3 from Atlanta. The cool boat ride sure was nice for a change, but it warmed up quickly making for a pretty day. Our first stop was where we found some birds diving where the tide was falling out a pass connecting two lagoons near Lake Robin. We had to weed through some throwbacks, but the keepers were really nice. The guys put near 60 on ice before the bite slowed down. They really wanted to catch some reds so off we went to a pond I like and it was on. Limited out on reds and must have caught and released 50+ more. Add in a bass, a drum, 4 sheepshead, and dozen more trout and the box was stuffed to the top. Great day of fishing with a fun group of guys.

I have this Tuesday and Wednesday open.

                                    • Another great day at Shell Beach. Today I helped Capt. Mark with a two boat trip. My three guys hopped on the boat and off we went. Our first stop was in a pond near Four Horse and it was nonstop action. There were some trout out to the middle and cast anywhere near the shore and it was and it was an instant red. It was fast and fun, but most of them were just under sized. There were enough good sized reds around to keep us sticking around. We left there to another area to look for some trout, but instead we ran into more reds filling out our limits and the guys caught a bunch more that were lucky enough to avoid the grill. Ended up with 40 trout, 20 reds, and 10 sheepshead. Fun day with a fun group.

I have some openings next week.

                                      • Last Saturday at Shell Beach I had the Jamey Sandefur, his dad Doc, along with Grace, Brook, and Jim. It was a super foggy boat ride to our first stop where we got on a decent trout bite till some idiot in a tower boat came flying through right over our fish. We started to get them going again then comes two more boat loads of idiots right over our corks. After that was over we went and looked for a few reds and the crew put some nice ones on ice. We called it quits with rain on the horizon, but not before the crew put a nice box of fish together.
