IGFA Hot News and Hot Catches – August 2010
Louisiana’s Gulf coast: Still Teeming with Fish! (w/photo)
Yes there’s oil in the Gulf off Louisiana’s coast as the cleanup continues following the oil disaster, but there’s also fish, lots of hungry species as four leaders of the recreational-fishing community along with that state’s governor found out earlier this month.
At the invitation of Doug Olander, IGFA Representative and Editor-in-Chief of Sport Fishing magazine, IGFA President Rob Kramer joined other leaders of the U.S. recreational-fishing industry and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal on an exploratory fishing trip off the coast of Louisiana, USA. In a national show of support for regional anglers, Jindal, Kramer and Olander were joined on their fishing trip by Center for Coastal Conservation President Jeff Angers; American Sportfishing Association President Mike Nussman; and Ted Venker, editor of the Coastal Conservation Association’s Tide magazine.
Since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April of this year, more than 35% of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico had been closed to recreational fishing - coming at a high price to the thousands of people who make their living in the industry. Saltwater recreational fishing was reopened in the vast majority of Louisiana’s state waters just two weeks prior to the trip. One of the objectives of the trip was to generate positive publicity for the state and its many businesses that rely on recreational fishing and to send a clear message that coastal anglers can once again get back out on the water with families and friends.
With coastal businesses still reeling from fisheries closures at the height of their busiest season, the group noted the importance of making whole the thousands of local businesses dependent on recreational fishing. In response, Governor Jindal promised to seek a timely resolution on reopening federal waters that remain closed to all fishing.
Capt. Tommy Pellegrin of Houma, Louisiana, hosted the trip aboard his charter boat, Reel Life. After a 50-mile trip into the Gulf of Mexico beyond the closed area, Pellegrin put his clients onto hungry fish swarming around oil rigs. Indeed, the lack of recent fishing pressure seemed to make the fishing better than ever. Kramer said the anglers aboard the Reel Life caught several species of grouper and snapper, along with cobia, mackerel, dolphin fish and blackfin tuna.
While the fishing was spectacular, Kramer noted that “we still need to be cognizant of the potential long-term impacts of this disaster on the fishery. It is now more important than ever to increase research and monitoring efforts in the Gulf of Mexico – for the sake of the fish, and the people who rely on them.”
For more details on the trip please go to Olander’ blog on the Sport Fishing Magazine website at http://www.sportfishingmag.com/blog.jsp?ID=1 where Olander also has a link to a pictorial feature of what the recreational fishing leaders found.
The Take Marlin off the Menu Campaign makes great strides as
Billfish Conservation Act of 2010 is introduced to U.S. Congress
(w/photo)
It was a momentous day for the IGFA’s Take Marlin off the Menu campaign this past July 21, as House of Representatives Bill 5804, also known as the Billfish Conservation Act of 2010, was officially introduced to the 111th United States Congress.
The bill is sponsored by Representative John Shadegg (R-AZ) and co-sponsored by Representatives Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Anh “ Joseph” Cao (R-LA) and Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL).
"Billfish are important recreational resources that have been overfished,” said Shadegg to the IGFA Hot News. “The Billfish Conservation Act of 2010 is a first step in revitalizing this species and their surrounding ecosystems. It also establishes the same regulatory structure for both Pacific and Atlantic billfish to ensure that black markets do not continue."
The Take Marlin off the Menu campaign began nearly two years ago when a study commissioned by the IGFA revealed that the United States was the world’s biggest importer of billfish. Since that time, the IGFA and the National Coalition for Marine Conservation have focused the campaign extensively on educating the American public as to what billfish are, their role in marine ecosystems, and their imperiled status from commercial overfishing. The Billfish Conservation Act of 2010 is the culmination of the campaign’s efforts thus far and, if approved and made law, will put a complete stop to commercial harvest, sale and importation of billfish in the United States.
“Now we will need your help,” said IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser. Please visit http://capwiz.com/keepamericafishing/issues/alert/?alertid=15969791 and send an electronic letter to your local Representative today. It takes less than five minutes and by sending this letter you will be taking an active role in conserving these fish we cherish. “Together with your help, we can ensure that no marlin, sailfish or spearfish will ever be sold or imported into the United States again.”
New IGFA Junior Angler website launched; Fish, Explore, Discover, Learn (w/logo)
Now kids can get their hands on fishing on the web – completely free of charge!
Under the tagline “Fish, Explore, Discover, Learn,” the International Game Fish Association launched its new Junior Angler program July 15 with a brand new website full of pro fishing tips and tricks, species id, biological information on marine and aquatic animals, games, contests, photo galleries and videos.
The IGFA’s Junior Angler and Smallfry World Records will also be featured – but every child will have the opportunity to brag about their catches, record or otherwise.
“The overall goal and mission of the IGFA’s Junior Angler Program is to get more kids actively involved in recreational fishing activities,” said IGFA Education Director David Matagiese. “By transitioning our Junior Angler Program into a free online membership format, thousands of children all over the world will be able to share photos and fishing stories with each other – connecting young anglers across lakes, streams and oceans.”
The Junior Angler page will be accessible from www.igfa.org under the “Educate” tab.
Indeed, being free, digital and interactive are key new features of the IGFA’s new Junior Angler program. Hoping to reach as many youths as possible, and with the support of Mercury Marine, Critter Control, CostaDel Mar, Rapala and TakeMeFishing.org, the IGFA is providing their wealth of resources to kids in a safe and easily-accessible venue and without charging a fee – a price point parents will appreciate. Another winning point with parents is the Junior Angler website’s designation as a SafeSite, which means each child’s information and experience is completely protected while he or she is online.
New Junior Angler members will also still receive many of the same great benefits they had in the past including free admission to the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum, discounts in the IGFA online store, free access to all of the IGFA Junior Angler World Records and much more. Combined with all the activities available on the website, the IGFA is offering plenty of ways to keep kids engaged in fishing all summer long – and all for free!

August Hot Catches (wphotos)
The all-tackle world records for two popular species lead off the IGFA Hot Catches report for August. International Game Fish Association World Records Coordinator Jack Vitek updates us with those and eight other recent recreational fish catches from Mongolia, South Africa, Netherlands, Ecuador, Bolivia and across the U.S., now before the world records committee reviewing potential new records.
A huge blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) was Greg Bernal’s goal on June 20 while fishing the Missouri River, out of North County, Missouri, USA and he indeed landed one, with an impressive 58.97 kg (130 lb 0 oz) specimen. The monster catfish that Bernal, of Florissant, Mo., caught qualifies for a new IGFA all-tackle record. It took him 20 minutes to land using an Asian carp to entice the catfish. The current IGFA record is 56.24 kg (124 lb 0 oz) caught five years ago by Timothy Pruitt from the Mississippi River near Alton, Ill. (Photo: blue catfish – 36155)
Less than a year ago Michigan’s Tom Healy made headlines in the fishing world by catching a new IGFA World Record brown trout weighing (18.8 kg) 41 lb 7 oz. And this past July 16, Roger Hellen of Franksville, Wisc., USA stirred a great deal of talk after landing an equally big brown trout (Salmo trutta) weighing 18.82 kg (41 lb 8 oz). Hellen was fishing Lake Michigan, off the Wisconsin coastline trolling a Fishlander spoon when the monster hit it taking him 30 minutes to land. Though Hellen’s fish is one ounce heavier than the current all-tackle record set by Healy on Sept. 8, 2009, according to IGFA World Record requirements, to replace a record fish weighing 11.33 kg (25 lbs) or more, the replacement must weigh at least one half of 1 percent more than the existing record. Bottom-line, Healy and Hellen might be sharing an IGFA World Record tie for their two fish.(Photo: brown trout – 36145)
Guided by her uncle while fishing out of Key West, Fla., USA, on June 3, smallfry angler Brielle Bennett of Cinnaminson, N.J., USA, landed an African pompano (Alectis ciliaris) weighing 5.7 kg (12 lb 9 oz) to qualify for the female-smallfry record. The uncle Brian Bennett said Brielle needed eight minutes to land her potential record catch after the fish hit her live pinfish. The current IGFA record in the junior division is vacant. (Photo: African pompano – 35892)
While flyfishing the Ur River in Mongolia on June 7, Marles H. Frankman of Golden Valley, Minn., USA, guided by Ganpurev Enebish, landed a 21.55 kg (47 lb 8 oz) taimen (Hucho taimen). The exciting fish took 30 minutes to land after hitting Mrs. Frankman’s Dairiki streamer fly to qualify her for the 8 kg (16 lb) tippet record. Frankman released the fish after documenting and photographing it. The current IGFA record is 12.7 kg (28 lb 0 oz) pulled from Mongolia’s Eg River in 2001. (Photo: taimen – 35895)
Miami, Fla., USA angler Xavier Casal guided by Rafael Moran, landed the potential men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record for broomtail grouper (Mycteroperca xenarcha) on June 6, while fishing Isla Santa Clara, Ecuador. Casal’s grouper weighed 23.13 kg (51 lb 0 oz) and took 18 minutes to land after the fish hit Casal’s Rapala X-Rap 30 lure. The current IGFA record is vacant. (Photo: broomtail grouper – 35896)
IGFA Representative Peter F. Binaski of Costa Mesa, Calif., USA, guided by Valentin Giusto, landed a beautiful dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) on July 1, while fishing Bolivia’s PlumaRiver, to qualify for the 3 kg (6 lb) tippet record. After taking Binaski’s fly and a 15 minute fight, Binaski’s dorado weighed in at 7.48 kg (16 lb 8 oz). The current IGFA record is 2.84 kg (6 lb 4 oz) held by IGFA Lifetime Achievement Award recpient Capt. Jay Wright Jr., of Hollywood, Fla. from Argentina’s Uruguay River near LaZona two years ago. Binaski released the fish after documenting its vitals such as weight and length and photographs of the bright and colorful fish. (Photo: dorado – 35940)
World traveler and multi-record holder Stan Nabozny of The Woodlands, Texas, USA, guided by Andy Nicholson, landed a 3.03 kg (6 lb 11 oz) barbel (Barbus barbus) on June 24, while fishing out of Holme Lacy, United Kingdom. Nabozny landed the fish in five minutes, after it hit his marine halibut pellet, to qualify for the 10 kg (20 lb) line class record. The current IGFA record is 2.21 kg (4 lb 14 oz) set by Nabozny last year in the same waters. Nabozny released the fish following documentation and photos. (Photo: barbel – 35952)
Hilton Head, S.C. USA Captain Brian Vaughn of Hilton Head Island, SC, USA was guiding clients off his home town on July 9 when he took some time to cast a fly and landed a sizeable tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) to qualify for the men’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet record. Vaughn’s fish weighed 7.6 kg (16 lb 8 oz), and was landed in six minutes on a Lefty's Deceiver fly. The current IGFA record is 7.42 kg (16 lb 6 oz) is 15 years old and was recorded in Barra del Colorado, Costa Rica. (Photo: tripletail – 36133)
Trolling a Rapala X-Rap lure behind his jet ski out of Umkomaas, South Africa on May 23, Craig Oliver of Pinetown, South Africa, caught a talang queenfish (Scomberoides commersonianus) and two potential IGFA World Records. Oliver’s catch weighed 17.9 kg (39 lb 7 oz) and took him 15 minutes to land. His fish qualifies for both the all-tackle record and the men’s 24 kg (50 lb) line class records. The current IGFA All-Tackle record is 16.5 kg (36 lb 6 oz) recorded in Karachi, Pakistan and the line class is 14.5 kg (31 lb 15 oz) from Mozambique, South Africa. (Photo: talang queenfish – 36147)
P.C. Ouwendijk of Ouderkerk Aan Den Ijssel, Netherlands, guided by Les Lozowski, was fishing Hollands Diep, Netherlands on June 6 when a 6.54 kg (14 lb 6 oz) zander (Sander lucioperca) hit his lure. This potential IGFA 15 kg (30 lb) line class record was caught using a Culprit Shad on a jig head. The current IGFA record is vacant. (Photo: zander – 36154)
Where’s Woz? Close to 1,000 species (w/photo)

Collins and Shevlin win FKO/IGFA Inshore World Championship
It wasn’t just the human competition but Mother Nature throwing almost everything she had into three days of exciting fishing and a bizarre finish for winners Robert Collins in fly, and Barry Shevlin in light tackle. They and 21 other tournament champion anglers were competing in the 10th annual Florida Keys Outfitters/IGFA Inshore World Championship held July 13 – 15 on the flats and backcountry of FloridaBay.
“The weather over the three days was so different it was unbelievable,” said tournament director Sandy Moret. “The first day was hot and sunny and the anglers had good visibility and nearly everyone caught some fish. Nobody jumped out in an overwhelming lead any day and everybody was always in it.
“The second day started out nice and fairly calm with a little breeze but by mid day Thor was throwing lighting bolts,” said Moret. Ten of the boats spent over an hour seeking cover from the thunderstorm near Flamingo, and then as it cleared they went back to catching fish.
Again it was still anybody’s tournament.
Moret said on the last day it still was a wide open tournament but again the weather was a factor. They also faced long periods of intermittent clouds that reduced the sight fishing.
“It was blowing pretty hard, 15 to 18 mph all morning and then about mid day more rain storms and showers made it virtually impossible for the fly anglers.
Collins of Islamorada and Naples, Fla., USA, who won three previous titles with spinning gear, focused his skills this year casting fly. Teamed with Islamorada Captain John Donnell as his guide he quickly caught and released three redfish on the first morning followed by one lone bonefish on the second for a very slim and shaky lead with several other anglers close behind.
But the “trial by weather” was affecting the other anglers, especially the fly teams from the wind and glare from the clouds. Showing no releases for the final day a disheartened Collins had his spirits brightened upon reaching the dock to find out the other nine angler/guide teams were all skunked on the final day too, as his early points made the difference.
“Looking at the weather forecasts I knew the fishing was going to be tough going into the tournament,” smiled Collins in his victory, “but I didn’t expect it to be that tough.”
Brower Moffitt of Palm Beach, Fla., teamed with Islamorada Capt. Mike Ehlers, grabbed second in the fly division, and Kathryn Hoar, Hanover, Penn., was third with guide Capt. Brian Helms.
Light tackle competitors fare better – with four, five species slams
Catching all five of the required species (bonefish, redfish, permit, tarpon and snook) comprises a “slam” and in the light tackle division there were four anglers that did. It was the extra catches towards a second slam that made the difference for the top three winners.
In his game strategy Shevlin from Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., guided by Frankie Ortiz was consistent in his fishing over the three days despite the weather challenges.
“The Shevlin/Ortiz team had 1.8 slams needing just one tarpon to fill a second slam,” said Moret. “But what they finished with was enough to edge out the field.”
Jake Turek, Taverneir, Fla., guided by Capt. Dave Denkert, Islamorada, placed second in the light tackle division with 1.6 slams needing a second permit and tarpon to complete a second slam. Roger Fernandez, Pinecrest, Fla., with guide Capt. Rob Fordyce had 1.4 slams taking third place on points breaking a tie with Derrick Pruitt of Naples.
Every day of fishing was tough, which was so unlike just two weeks ago here,” said Moret. “But a total of 78 fish were caught and released including 18 bonefish, 13 tarpon, nine permit, 14 snook and 24 redfish. “There was a concern on catching snook because of the devastating winter that took a toll on them, but they are bouncing back,” he said.
Mike Myatt, COO of the International Game Fish Association in Dania Beach, Fla. said, "The quality of the fish caught and the quality of the anglers and guides really shine in this event, and when you throw in the strategy of chasing a slam, it really brings out the best in the competitors."
The IGFA is the championships’ sole nonprofit benefactor.
The 23 anglers were invited to this year's championship by winning at least one of 40 qualifying angling events during 2009 in the U.S., the Bahamas, Belize, Sweden, Trinidad & Tobago and Australia. Fishing took place from World Wide Sportsman’s Bayside Marina.

Passing of former IGFA Trustee Stewart Campbell (w/head shot)
Stewart Campbell, a longtime and devoted member of the IGFA Board of Trustees, passed away on August 4, 2010 after a battle with cancer. He was 79.
Ranked as one of the world’s best anglers, Campbell fished the oceans for more than 40 years, set more than 15 world records, and was highly respected by the international angling community.
"He was part of a great generation of guys that hunted and fished all along the Texas coast, all concerned with conservation and preserving the resources for their grandchildren," said Terry Atmar, Stewart's son-in-law in an interview with the Houston Chronicle.
Campbell graduated first in his class at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Scholarship for excellence in engineering. He later designed and built sport fishing boats and shallow-water bay boats popular along the Gulf coast.
His love for fishing took him around the world. His son-in-law said while on a fishing trip in 1996 in Venezuela, Campbell was pulled out of his boat by a 1,000-pound marlin and lived to tell the story. He also refined the "bait-and-switch" technique for fishing, where the rigged bait and hook are slid back to the fish as the teaser lure is retrieved.
Campbell served as chairman of the IGFA’s Rules Committee that provides oversight on the IGFA’s International Angling Rules and World Records issues.
"He was involved in research on marlin migration and was concerned about the decline in their population," Atmar added. "He was really worried about the resource."
“It is a sad day indeed for the sportfishing fraternity that we should lose such a person as Stewart,” expressed George Matthews, Chairman of the IGFA Board. “In my opinion he was a large part of the consciousness of the IGFA. I personally relied on his well thought-out interpretation of the rules and his kindly manner. Our prayers go out to Nikki and the Campbell family at this difficult time.”

In the Changing Gallery: last chance to see “A Tribute to Guy Harvey and To the Art That Started it All”
As a young boy, Guy Harvey was entranced by Ernest Hemingway’s story The Old Man and the Sea. In the early 1970’s, Guy began sketching his favorite parts. These sketches comprised Guy’s first art show in 1985. This rarely-viewed complete series of 59 pen-and-ink drawings, from the private collection of Cheryl and Dave Copham is on display in the museum’s Changing Gallery. Also featured are sculptures by Kent Ullberg and the photos of Bill Boyce. The exhibit is scheduled to close September 7.

Having fun, spending time in the great outdoors, and perhaps catching a fish for the first time in their lives were some of the goals of the young anglers participating in the first of what’s expected to be an annual Young Anglers Tournament at the Oceanside Pier on August 7.
Held on one of California’s iconic piers, 109 youngsters from ages six to 16 competed for the individual prizes awarded to each of the age categories.
Sponsors of event were the IGFA, United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC), and the Oceanside Pier Bait Store.
IGFA Trustee Michael Farrior, IGFA Representative Catherine Miller; UPSAC President Ken Jones and Board Members Ben Acker and Eugene Kim, plus Pam and Ed Gonzales representing the Oceanside Pier Bait Store and members of the San Diego Sportfishing Council provided invaluable help with the free food, prizes, gifts, bait and tackle as well as judging the event. Loaner outfits were provided by the IGFA for those without tackle.
The winner of each tournament category were: six year old: Josiah Espino; seven year old: Javier Cordova; eight year old: a tie between Zachary Perez and Nathaniel Gonzalez; nine year old: Riley Jarman; 10 year old: Ian Odnstock; 11 year old: Nicholas Tagle; 12 year old: Luis Madrigaz; 13 year old: Luke Konyn; 14 year old: David Hernandez; 15 year old: Jared Gauthier and 16 year old: Julia Gauthier.
Hernandez was named the overall winner and will have his name engraved on the perpetual trophy donated by sculptor David Wirth.
Each of the age division winners won a rod and reel, a copy of Pier Fishing in California, and an impressive certificate from the IGFA. Following the three-hour derby, a raffle was held with prizes that included Okuma rods and reels, binoculars, and hats.
Jones said, “Youth tournaments such as this help UPSAC meet one of its main goals, in the promotion and education of recreational fishing for youth.”
In addition to the food, fun and excitement of catching a fish and bragging rights, every participant received a "goody bag" full of fishing equipment, Frisbees, magazines and other items, as well as the chance to win some great raffle gifts.

IGFA Education Coordinator Jeff Mackin said all classes are limited to the first 24 anglers to sign up and held Tuesday nights from 7 – 10 p.m. at the IGFA Headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla.
IGFA Education Director Dave Matagiese said student anglers from previous classes have reported greatly improved catch ratios this summer after putting their newly gained knowledge to practice on the water.
“We continue to hear from anglers who attended the program with excellent feedback on how they’ve become more efficient in finding fish faster and making each strike count.”
The cost is $100 for IGFA members and $150 for non-members per class. For more information or to sign up please contact Mackin at 954-924-4340 or via JMackin@igfa.org.
