Join our e-mail alert list

A Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) employee is under investigation by the Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans for disrupting a 2007 seal hunt.

According to the Canadian Press, a HSUS helicopter pilot was reportedly scaring seals off of ice floes and into the water in an attempt to disrupt an April 5 seal hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, west of Newfoundland.

“There were seal hunters in the area and the allegation is that the pilot flew his helicopter in a way that would disrupt the seal hunt,” said Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesman Phil Jenkins.

“Anti-hunters claim to despise Canada’s seal hunt, but where would some groups be without it?” said USSA Senior Vice President Rick Story. “The seal hunt that so many groups supposedly abhor is an annual fundraiser that rakes in thousands of dollars for their organizations.”

The harp seal population is estimated at over five million and wildlife officials say the hunt is a humane, sustainable enterprise that benefits Canadian fishermen.

PETA Protests Fish Fry Fundraiser

Newkirk Steamed over Fried Fish

July 27, 2007 (Alaska)

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk is steamed about a fundraising slogan for an anti-capital punishment campaign that reads, “Fry Fish, Not People.”

There was probably smoke coming out of Newkirk’s ears when she heard the slogan that Alaskans Against the Death Penalty are using to raise money. Her organization sent a letter to the anti-death penalty group asking that it adopt a new motto - “Fry Onions, Not People.”

PETA’s letter said, “Serving the corpses of animals at an anti-death penalty event is like serving cigarettes at an anti-cancer fundraiser.” It went on to demand that the group also change its menu for an annual fish fry, urging them to serve vegetarian dishes.

Nations Largest Anti Group Set to Join Forces in Partne

Nations Largest Anti Group Set to Join Forces in Partnership
Nations Largest Anti Group Set to Join Forces in Partnership

January 18, 2008

On January 14, the HSUS announced their corporate partnership with the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR). The two will collaborate in establishing the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA).

This provides the HSUS an even wider platform on which to promote animal rights. Of the 80,000 veterinarians in the U.S., only 11,000 are supporters of the HSUS.

The HSUS is no stranger to conducting their own veterinary practices. They started the Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS) in 2002, which operates only in areas where they feel regular veterinarians are under serving.

AVAR which was founded in 1981 represents more than 3,500 veterinarians.

This merger will grant the HSUS more funds, publicity, and supporters, helping them continue to wage war against sportsmen. The partnership will be official on February 1, 2008.

Former Beatle Joins PETA Crusade

Former Beatle Joins PETA Crusade

April 29, 2008

Sir Paul McCartney, formerly of the legendary band The Beatles, is one of the latest stars of the entertainment world to join forces with anti-hunting group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

McCartney appears in a PETA print advertisement, wearing one of the organization’s pro-vegetarian t-shirts. PETA also featured an interview with McCartney on its website.

The text of the ad relates the moment when McCartney first became a vegetarian. He says that he realized it when he was fishing and the fish on his line was dying and struggling for breath.

Vegan Diet Leads to Rickets and Death of Child

Report: Vegan Diet Leads to Rickets and Death of Child
Doctors have long debated the nutritional value of a vegan diet for children. Tragically, a 12-year-old girl from Scotland died from what doctors report was an attempt to follow a vegan diet enforced by her parents.

According to Fox News the girl was transported to the hospital where doctors claimed her curved spine was that of an 80-year-old. In addition to having several broken bones and a degenerative bone disease, she exhibited a developed case of rickets.

The child’s parents are looking at possible charges, as some doctors claim that her maladies were brought on by the strict vegan diet she has been on since birth. Vegan diets exclude meat, fish, and dairy, which would have provided the growing child with the nutrition to prevent her conditions.

Unfortunately, the case is not the first of its kind. A couple last year let their infant starve to death on what they claimed to be a vegan diet. They were tried and received a life sentence in prison.

Fishing Breaks Out in New Directions

Fishing Breaks Out in New Directions

The basic laws of physics that held us to retrieving in a straight line have been rewritten with the invention of “Planing Floats with Lateral Motion Control”. The BulletBobber turns any rod and reel into a highly sensitive remote control providing the on-demand choices of running a bait or lure to the left or right. Another law of physics the BulletBobber breaks is the law that says the distance of your retrieve is equal to the length of your cast.

The remote control functions work in current or calm water as shown in these two videos.

Popular Outdoor Sports writer to Redevelope Website

USA Today Blog:

Popular outdoor sports writer and photographer looks to “hook” fishing enthusiasts with technologically enhanced website

Longtime outdoor writer and fishing photographer, Jerry Labella, announced today plans to upgrade his widely read salt water fishing web magazine in order to reel in fishing fans, which require a quicker site connection, access to the site from their mobile phones and up-to-date, easy to read fishing reports and other information.

According to Labella, who has been fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana coastal marsh areas for nearly 40 years, rapid changes in cell phone technology was the primary motivation for his decision to upgrade the site’s connection capability.

“The site needs to keep up with the new iPhone uploads so anglers can post fishing reports without actually going to the website. Captains that charter will now be able to use their cell phones to upload reports at their fishing location,” said Labella.

The new site will also benefit personal computer users by featuring up-to-date, easy to follow website navigation, more You Tube how-to videos for anglers who catch a variety of fish and faster load speeds.

“Visitors don't like waiting for slow website loads. I know I don't. I leave,” said Labella.

However, fishing enthusiasts will have to exercise patience for the new site, which is slated for completion in March 2011.

In the meantime, fishing fans can read Labella’s salt water fishing articles, tips, techniques and methods minus the new changes on his current website, all major fishing magazines and fishing sites.

Incarcerated Animal Rightist Becomes

Incarcerated Animal Rightist Becomes a “Press Officer”

It appears that the vegan, so-called “Animal Liberation Front Lone Wolf” Walter Bond, has a new job of sorts. According to a recent release from the North American Animal Liberation Press Office (NAALPO), Bond is now the group’s newest “press officer.”
In the release, NAALPO states that,
“Walter’s dedication to animal liberation and effectively communicating such passion is not only admirable but also heavily influential, therefore his addition is integral.”
It went on to describe him as,
“… an abolitionist animal liberation activist that has gone from a slaughterhouse builder to the Animal Liberation Front operative known as the “Lone Wolf”. As a prisoner of war, Walter remains an essayist, writer, philosopher and motivating force within the struggle for Animal and Earth Liberation. His entire philosophy and program of action is centered around these six words ‘Animal Liberation, Whatever it May Take!’“
The release concludes by listing the ways in which fellow animal rights activists can contact Bond and even schedule interviews.
As reported previously by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, Bond was arrested in July, 2010 as a suspect in an arson fire in Glendale, Colorado. He subsequently pled guilty and is still incarcerated while awaiting his sentencing in February. He is also suspected in two Utah arson fires and has a 1997 conviction for an Iowa based arson.

Bullseye Huron-Manistee National Forest - Sportsmen Can Help Minimize Harmful Court Decisions Friday, January 14, 2011 9:40:00 AM

By Jeremy Rine, Associate Director of State Services
As sportsmen it is often frustrating to hear of court decisions that threaten our ability to hunt, fish, or trap. Sportsmen can, and I strongly encourage them to, support organizations like the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation (USSAF). The USSAF protects sportsmen through the courts and makes sure that their voices are heard.
Even though sportsmen are often represented in legal battles they can still be frustrating experiences. It often doesn’t feel like you, individually, have control over the outcome.
A courtroom showdown over hunting is a very different battle from those that take place in a statehouse. Sportsmen cannot call judges like they do their legislators and urge them to side with the outdoor community. Courts also do not hold pubic hearings like that in the legislative process where sportsmen can show up and openly voice their opinions.
Lawyers must represent sportsmen in the courts. This can leave sportsmen feeling like they are stuck on the sidelines, despite the fact that they financially support pro-sportsman court efforts.
However, sometimes following bad court decisions there are opportunities for sportsmen to help minimize the damaging effects. The decision over gun hunting in portions of the Huron-Manistee National Forest in Michigan is a prime example.
As previously reported, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the U.S. Forest Service’s regulations required that it consider banning hunting with firearms on lands designated as “semi-primitive” within the Huron-Manistee National Forest.
Because of the ruling, the Forest Service is now doing just that. It is considering whether or not to completely or partially ban gun hunting in these areas and they are looking for the public to weigh in on the decision.
Sportsmen can actively get back into the game and make their individual voices heard by submitting comments to the Forest Service. Hopefully, with a strong showing of support from sportsmen, the Service will conclude that a ban is not needed.
Make no mistake, the precedent set by the bad decision is still there. The decision could lead to more anti-hunting lawsuits over “semi-primitive” areas on other Forest lands. But, with sportsman action, the effects of the decision can be lessened in the Huron-Manistee area.
To deal with the troubling precedent itself, the USSA and a coalition of nineteen other leading conservation groups sent a letter to the Forest Service requesting that it rewrite the regulations the Court used to render the anti-hunting decision.
I encourage you to submit a comment to the Forest Service voicing your support for gun hunting throughout the semi-primitive areas within the Huron-Manistee National Forest. Ask them to support the “No-Action” alternative.
Comments can be submitted to Lee Evison, Forest Planner, Huron-Manistee National Forest, 1755 S. Mitchell Street, Cadillac, MI 49601. Sportsmen can also fax comments to Lee Evison at (231) 775-5551 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (231) 775-5551 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or email comments to [email protected]. Comments sent via email must include “Forest Plan SEIS” as the subject line. Comments must be received by February 11, 2011.
