    Youth Hunting Bill Passes Senate
Nebraska Families Afield Bill Must Be Voted On One More Time

    January 28, 2008 (Nebraska)

The Nebraska Senate is one step closer to enacting a new law lowering the barriers from passing on our hunting heritage to the next generation.

Today, Legislative Bill 690 passed on a voice vote on the Senate Floor. Legislative Bill 690 sponsored by Sen. Deb Fischer, I-Valentine creates an apprentice hunter education exemption certificate. It allows an experienced hunter to take a newcomer hunting before completing a hunter education course. The measure also lowers the deer hunting age for mentored youth from 12 to 10, allowing parents and mentors to share outdoor traditions with tomorrow’s hunters.

In Nebraska a bill must pass three times before the state Senate to become law. On Thursday, January, 17, the Senate passed the measure the first time by a vote of 31-2. With today's action, only one more vote stands between LB 690 and the governor's desk.

“This measure goes a long way to ensure Nebraska’s outdoor heritage and conservation efforts,” said Bud Pidgeon, USSA president. “Through the apprentice hunting experience newcomers can learn the necessary tools to safely experience and enjoy the outdoors for years to come.”

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, National Shooting Sports Foundation, and the National Wild Turkey Federation worked with the National Rifle Association and local sportsmen’s organizations, to ensure support for LB 690.

The effort is part of the national Families Afield campaign, established by the USSA, National Shooting Sports Foundation, and National Wild Turkey Federation to urge states to review and eliminate unnecessary hunting age restrictions. 21 states have already enacted Families Afield style bills since the program was launched in 2004.

Take Action! Nebraska sportsmen should call their state senators to urge them to approve LB 690. To contact your senator call (402) 471-2271 or go to www.ussportsmen.org and click on the Legislative Action Center to get contact information on your specific senator.
