Default Sam Rayburn Big Bass Fishing Report

Sam Rayburn is at 158.66 ft and falling as they generate more electricity.
The lake is close to 6 ft low and you are seeing a lot more timber above the water line. The city of Warsaw will be just under the water as you come out of the long cut. Be careful when running out of the cut to the 147 bridge. There will also be a lot of sand bars just under the water so keep a close eye out for them.
Well we got a break in the weather with a cool front that pushed thru. It was nice to be on the lake early in the morning as the sun came up and have a cool breeze blowing. It was like a shot in the arm to get way, enjoy a day on the lake and forget about everything but fishing.
Friday I lunched the boat before daylight and set my sights on catching a Big Bass. The mission was to fish hard all day and put a Big Bass in the boat. The target area was 6 to 25 ft deep offshore structure, no bank fishing today. This meant working big baits over some of the best spots to get that one bite. There aren’t a lot of bites when you’re doing this but you’re not looking for little fish. The day had started around 6:30 a m and by 8:30 I had nothing to show for all the work. The moon was just going down around 9am when I got the first hit on the C/R. With 3 boats in sight I set the hook a little on the light side and kept my rod low. Didn’t want to give anything up. I caught several fish in the past week on this spot that had gone over 5 lbs. I hoped this one would go that much or more. Keeping the rod low the fish made a couple runs before coming up to the surface so I could get a eye on it, just before it pulled free. 6 to 7 lbs by the looks of her. By about 10:00 am the north wind died down and things got still. This can make things even tougher to get the fish to bite. Schoolies started chasing shad but I continued looking for structure and fishing on the edges. By noon the wind had came back up and I moved around to different areas to keep hunting for that big fish. At 3:00 pm I had fished around 4 other spots and had nothing to show for it but hanging up and breaking off to retie and fish some more. Around 4:00 pm I had made it back to where I lost the fish earlier to spend some more time there. After about 20 minutes I got the rig back to the boat. I let it sit there for just a few seconds and when I went to pick it up I felt her. As she started to ease off, I set the hook. The fight was on. She made several runs by the boat but never did try to come up and jump. I scrambled for net and was still thinking about it not coming up and jumping to throw the hook. I thought, “Maybe it’s a catfish”, but then I saw her as she made a run just under the surface. Finally I got her aboard. I’ll take this one! 9.2 lbs! Many more fish like this one are out there. As fall begins the temperatures have started to cool down but the fishing is gonna really heat up. There was a 10 lb plus fish caught earlier in the week in the grass line so things are looking up. Don’t wait too long to get your fall trip booked.
The fish have started to move up some as we are finding more and more shad up shallow around the points and in the pockets. There have been several pockets that have had a lot of small fish up shallow hitting Stanley Ribbits around the grass lines and pads. There been several fish caught on the outside edge throwing senko’s and wacky worms. Let them fall off the edge and sit there. The Spinner bait and crankbait will start to pickup more fish as things cool down and as more fish move up. On the long points and ledges you find fish starting to stage before moving in to chase shad and fatten up for winter. Carolina and Texas rig worms along with the football jig come in handy here as you work these areas
Crappie; The Crappie fishing is on and off. We have seen lots of bream and catfish at times on the brush piles that can be loads of fun for the kids. The bite has been very light and that makes it hard on the newer anglers. Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade, changing room and the port-o-potty. We even carry a fan for the real scorching days. It makes the trip a lot nicer for everyone. It’s one way to get the kids out of the house and have some fun. We can handle up to 8 anglers.
God Bless

Sam Rayburn water level has fallen this week to161.41. The water is clear for the most part.
I’ve been out several times this week fishing with clients and have caught some respectable fish.. Thursday morning we started with a father and son team. They had been here for a few days and the son was ahead on catching fish before our trip. We started on the shallow bite around the pepper grass with dad hauling in one fish that would top the scales around 4.5 lbs. Not a bad start. After about 30 minutes of hauling water with only a few short strikes we moved on. We tried a few more spots with no results. Ok, let’s change up. I had some fish on offshore structure that we hit and after a hard work out and came up with a 3.5 lbs for the son. That hot spot gave up another 4.5 lbs for my self and one that we broke off. The afternoon turned out hot and slow with only a few small fish. All in all Dad took the big fish and the son took the most fish caught. Friday morning the shallow bite went south. After making a lot of stops we turned to fishing offshore on ledges and structure to pick up a few fish. Again we broke one off on the structure offshore. Darn. I would like to see that fish. I’ll try for her again this week. The wind had been from the west early in the morning and had changed to the north by 10:00 A M and then just died. Boy it got hot so we cut it off early and headed in and waited to fish afternoon bite. The afternoon bite started around 5 as we hit our first spot off a long point without a bump. Our second spot, off another long point, gave up a couple nice fish. The third and fourth spots didn’t give up anything. We headed for some grass to try to get some action on grass jigs then we caught 4 fish before dark. Things are looking up as summer starts to get into full swing. The fish should start to get into a summer pattern that should make thing a little easier to put together.
One thing that is funny is a guy will go out and find a few good fish. He just can’t help but tell a couple of his buddies. They tell a couple of their buddies and so on. The next thing you know there are a dozen boats fishing that spot all day long. Look at it this way. If a guy comes out and fishes a point and catches 4 fish then moves on, then another guy does the same thing you can bet there will be a lot more do the same thing all day. So how long are those fish going to bite? Will they even stay there?

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has been tough in the last few weeks. There are a lot of fish just sitting on the brush piles. The bite has been very light and hard to feel and lots of folks really have to work hard to feel the bite .A few folks get keyed in to what’s going on and start to pick up some fish. We have had several large groups out with kids having a blast. Everything from Crappie to Bream and some pretty good size catfish. The new pontoon has plenty of shade and when things get really hot we have a fan to cool you off. There is room for everyone so get your group booked for a crappie trip. Get out and have some fun. Remember the kids are out of school so make plans to get them out for fishin’ n fun. If you need to get away from things this is THE place to do it. Kick back and enjoy a day on the water.

God Bless

Sam Rayburn water level is still falling this week to161.65. The water is clear for the most part.
Bass Fishing has been slow; not just the fish, but the fishermen. Is it because the winter was so cold, or the economy going haywire that has caused things to slow down? Times are tough and belt tightening has hit everywhere. With that said, with fewer trips this year for bass it’s been a lot harder to keep the reports up to date. Fishing has been more than different this year. I did take a day for myself to do a little bass fishing and found a few. The first place was a long point with pepper grass that changes to lily pads as you move back into the pocket. The topwater bite was slow with just one bite in a hundred yard stretch. That wasn’t what I wanted so moving out on some drops and ledges I began my search for larger fish to stretch my line. I found Kentucky’s at the first stop. After a little fun I moved on to the second spot to strike out without a bump. The next spot was one that I have fished a bunch in the last few years. With only a few short bumps I was thinking this would be a waste of time. But, what the hey? I’m here. The old Carolina Rig went sailing out to the bottom with little hopes of anything. Dragging it back slowly I got a small bump, no not a fish, just a stump on the bottom. I got the weight over the stump and that when she hit, and the FIGHT was on. I got her up and off what felt like a limb, then she was clear. After a few pictures back in she went and I went back to fishing. A few more casts turned up another fish that I didn’t get turned. It wrapped up in and around the structure. She felt like a better fish but that’s what everyone says about the one that got away. Moving to my last spot before the weather turned bad I put 4 more keepers in the boat. 16 to 22 ft was the depth I caught my fish in and all of them on Carolina Rig.
Sam Rayburn is still falling as they pulled more water this week to 163.00. The water is clear for the most part.
Sam Rayburn is known for the summer bite in the grass so let’s talk about the grass. First, the Hydrilla has shown signs of thinning in places. Looking for good Hydrilla coverage is always a plus when on Rayburn as these fish love the stuff. The next grass we see a lot of is milfoil. This is found all over the lake in the pockets and flats and can hold its share of fish. Next is the pepper grass as it starts to canopy over to give shade for some big fish. Now, one last thing that is green is the lily pads. I’m not sure if you put it in the grass family but it’s for sure on the bass family list of favorite hangouts. It’s just starting to get hot and the weather has been a little crazy. The summer bite has just getting started with a few fish being caught early around the pads and pepper grass on Ribbit Frogs and Buzz Baits. They have been in small groups but they have been scattered out. If you’re getting short strikes you might want to try a fluke or senko to see if small fish are hitting the bait. If that’s the case you can move on, or move out and see if the larger ones are holding a little deeper. Now let’s look at the 6 to 12 ft area. This area is everything from creek edges to points and ledges out on the main lake. This will have grass in places and crankbaits and spinner baits come to mind to cover a lot of water. If there is grass try to stay in contact with it to pull the fish out to bite. Light Texas and Carolina Rigs pulled over the grass really slowly can produce some good bites as they reach out there to grab it. Now for the deep bite we’ve been catching some as deep as 25 ft on Carolina Rigs and Jigs around offshore structure and this should improve. The deep grass is always on the mind of most top anglers. It’s not a piece of cake and can be a lot of work just to get 5 bites in the grass with a big jig. If you can get them and set the hook it can turn a day of fishing into an AWESOME DAY OF FISHING.
Crappie; The Crappie really started to move out to the brush piles and around the bridge this last week. We have had several larger groups out with the kids having a bust catching fish. We’re all always finding out something new. This week we had someone come up with a penalty box on the pontoon. Anytime you break off and have to retie you are put in the penalty box till its fixed. The kids love the idea and laughed when one of the adults got put in there. The new pontoon has plenty of shade and when things get real hot we have a fan to help keep you cool. There is room for everyone so get your group booked for a crappie trip, get out and have some fun. Remember the kids are out school so make plans to get them out to hear some fish tales. If you need to get away from things this is THE place to do it. Kick back and enjoy a day on the water.

Sam Rayburn is still falling as they pulled more water this week to 163.57. The water is clear for the most part.
Sam Rayburn is still trying to get into a summer pattern. We had a front move thru with some rain and thunder and that will change a few things. The runoff will discolor the water in the back of the creeks some but this isn’t all bad. We have caught fish in the back of the creeks after a big rain using Stanley ½ oz spinner bait in White or Chartreuse shirts pulling them real slow and bumping the grass with them. There have been some fish up shallow in the pads and grass on topwater early then they slow down. Then we used some flukes, senko’s and a few Needle worms from E2 Bait Co. to pick up some more nice fish. These fish are scattered so cover some water and don’t waste a lot of time till you find a group of them. At 6 to 12 foot we’ve been pulling a few fish out on Crankbaits and Texas rig worms from the grass and off points. The deeper structure has been giving up some fish on C/R and T/R working them slowly over the structure. We been using one of the new baits by E2 Bait Co. the DoodleBug, on our rigs and been doing pretty good with dipping the craws just a little.
Crappie; We have been catching a few fish off the brush piles and things are just starting to settle into the summer pattern. As summer gets here the crappie fishing will improve over the brush and things will heat up out there. The new pontoon has plenty of shade and when things get real hot we have a fan to help keep you cool. There is room for everyone so get your group booked for a crappie trip, get out and have some fun. Remember the kids will be out school soon so make plans to get them out there. Sam Rayburn is still falling as they pulled more water this week to 164.25. The water is just starting to clear and some of the water in the back is getting clear around 3 to 4 ft.
Sam Rayburn has been tough on everyone but thing are about to change. We have been catching some post spawn fish this week along with some that have been protecting fry in the shallows. We have had a little top water bite early and late on Stanley Ribbits in the grass and pads. It’s still spotty but it’s a start. There are a lot of fish setting in the 4 to 8 ft range in the grass and it’s been a challenge to get them to bite. Wacky worms and flukes have done some good. Slow way down and let them have time to think about it. The creek channels and points have been giving up a few fish on Texas rig worms but again you need to slow down. The offshore structure paid off with some fish in 18 to 24 foot on C/R and T/R. That’s a big plus to some that fish out there. If you haven’t learned to fish structure now’s the time to give me a call and get your trip booked.
Crappie; We have caught a few fish in the grass in the back of the pockets and have started to catch some off the brush piles. Things are starting to kick off for the crappie fishermen. These fish will be moving in and out for a few weeks before everything will settle into the summer pattern. Hopefully things will improve in the grass. The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a crappie trip, get out and have some

Sam Rayburn is still falling this week to 164.38. The water is starting to clear and some of the water in the back is clear around 3 to 4 ft.
Sam Rayburn has been holding on to a lot of fish this year as winter put these fish into a tail spin. We have found fish up in the buck brush one day then none the next. They seem to have just vanished. In all reality they’ve just moved out to the grass line and been holding tight. We’ve been catching some on senko’s and wacky worms but you really have to soak the bait to get them to bite. We have also been running some of the outside grass lines with Stanley Spinner Bait and covering a lot of water and picking up fish. White and Chartreuse have been two of the colors we’ve been having some luck with. Don’t be afraid to change colors if you’re not catching anything. Crankbaits has been getting a few fish to bite in 6 to 12 ft range, keeping it touching the grass is key here. Carolina and Texas rig on the points and creek channels has been getting a little better but it’s still slow. Well Sam Rayburn is running out of time on the Sharelunker program. Don’t give up the summer bite as the top water is just getting started.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and runs thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/v...c/sharelunker/
Crappie; We have caught a few fish in the grass in the back of the pockets and have started to catch some off the brush piles in a few places. Things are starting to kick off for the crappie fishermen. From what we have seen the eggs are not ready on most of them. Hopefully things will improve in the grass. The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a crappie trip and get out and have some fun.

Sam Rayburn has started to fall this week to 164.91. The water is still stained in the mid lake area but has started to show signs of slowly clearing.

Sam Rayburn has started to warm up but it’s been slow and the fish have been even slower about getting moving. The morning bite has been slow but as things start to warm up the afternoon bite heats right up. There are a lot of fish holding in the grass lines waiting to move up into the brush and get things started. There’ve been a lot of different baits that have been working, from pitching the buck brush with senko’s and soft plastics, to running spinner baits along the edges on the brush. We’ve been picking up a few fish on crankbaits along the outside edges of the grass. Some fish have been picked up on a light Carolina rig. Start looking for the fish to move up as the water warms up this week. Hang on ‘cause things are about to start getting exciting here on Big Sam.

Saturday was a tough day on the lake with winds that started out blowing from the SW at 10 mph. At times it hit 20 mph with gusts up to 30. The morning bite was tough. As the day went on, and the wind picked up, we had to hide from it without catching any fish to speak of. That got old so we broke out into the wind to fish the windy points and pockets. Well, the client, (Jack) caught the first fish, just over 3.5 lbs. Now it’s one to nothing. Not to be out done I caught one, a dink. Jack say’s we are even but I told him it takes two more dinks to even the weight. Well I got the other two, then one more dink. Yep, now I’m ahead, but not for long. He put two more fish over 4 lbs in the boat on me. Ok. I got one more dink ‘n that’s not helping, but it’s a fish. Then he hauled his forth good fish in on me. Ok. Rub it in. Jack is way ahead on fish and weight. It’s 1:30, let’s fish this a few more minutes before heading back thru the rough water. Yeah! I got that little bump and set the hook to bring in one that was over 6.5 lbs for the kicker fish. I still lost. Jack caught 4 of the 5 fish we had but I got the kicker fish to help with the total weight that went around 21 lbs. Not bad for a rough day on the lake. When the morning bite didn’t work in the brush it was time to change something and it paid off for us.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and runs thru April 30th. Crappie; There have been a few crappie caught in the grass on the points off the main lake on traps. They are on the move back down the river but it is still be slow for now.

The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a spring crappie trip.

Water Temp.57

Normal pool 164.40

Water Clarity 2 feet

Sam Rayburn has continued to rise this week to 165.14 but is showing signs of slowing down. The water is still stained in the mid lake area.

Sam Rayburn has been extra cold this year and it looks like this may cause a late spawn. As things are just setting on the edge of the spawn and had been looking up before the front hit. We got some more cold weather, sleet and a dusting of snow. It wasn’t a lot but will be enough to hold the fish in the grass lines. This just keeps the fish up shallow for a little longer for you to have a chance at catching that trophy Bass. We have had a lot of small males move up into the buck brush as the sun warms the water in the afternoon. We love it because it makes for some fun pitching along the pockets catching a lot of fish. The smaller females have also been making their way just on the outside of the brush. The larger females have been holding in the grass from 4 to 12 ft waiting for the right time and temperature to get their business done. Some of the females are loaded with eggs as you can see by the huge bellies on them. Pitching the brush with small jigs and plastic can be a lot of fun. It’s something that takes a lot of practice so don’t get discouraged if it takes a little time to get the hang of it. Once you figure it out you will be hooked on it. We have been picking up a few fish on Traps and Spinner baits this week. Mostly from working the grass edges along the banks as you move into the pockets. There are a lot of fish starting to stage up on the grass lines as they work their way into the pockets to spawn. A light Carolina Rig worked over the grass has been working in the pockets and off the edges of the grass

Crappie; There have been a few crappie caught in the grass on the points off the main lake on traps. They are on the move back down the river but it is still be slow for now.

The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a spring crappie trip.

God Bless

Sam Rayburn has cooled down some but we have still been catching some fish along the buck brush in the pockets. Most of them have come off soft plastics and Stanley Spinner baits along the edges. There are a few fish that have started to stake out beds but with the cooler weather the fish are hanging back some. There are a lot of fish that have moved up and are sitting in the grass waiting for the right moment. Working the drains and ditches with senko’s and wacky worms and then follow that up with a spinner bait has been putting a few fish in the boat for use. A light Carolina and Texas rig has been getting a few bites. The bite is very light and hard to feel. If they feel you it can be all over. Sometimes a light shaking on the bait will get them back so don’t give up. Things are just hanging on the edge and we need that sunshine and warmer water to get things to break open.
